In 1997 the USAF ACC (Air Combat Command) started flying unique formation
flights that combined current demonstration teams with civilian-owned
vintage fighter aircraft. The flight formations reflected the USAF pride
from the past to the present. There was such an overwhelming response,
they designed and approved a formal program to continue these unique
flight demonstrations.
In February 1998, the first Heritage Flight Training and Safety
seminar was held at Langley Air Force Base. The formal program of ground and
flight training was conducted and approved by the Director of Air and Space Operations.
In conjunction with the first Gathering of Mustangs and Legends, on April 7-10,
1999, the Heritage Flight program was formally included in the
USAF ACC participation in aircraft demonstrations across the country that combined
the “old fighters with today’s current fighters”.
